Equine
Supplements & Nutraceuticals by Eleanor Kellon, VMD |
“The Definitive Guide to Supplements
and their Use” |
Recommended
for all horsemen and veterinarians who are interested in equine
nutrition beyond the basics of grain, hay and water. From those
folks with heart problems or suppressed immune systems, to those
who just want to maintain their health and vigor, nutrition is a
path through which optimal health can be achieved. And science seems
to be proving it more each day. But what about horses? The author---a
veterinarian---laments the appalling lack of scientific research
in equine nutrition. She explains how the National Research Institute
determines minimum standards. And, in detailed charts and clearly
written text, she presents a comprehensive method by which to treat
both horses recovering from illness or injury and horses whose peak
performance is paramount. Every day more science is proving that
nutrition enhances human performance and benefits health. Equine
sports medicine is in its infancy, the author notes, but it is growing.
This
noteworthy volume of information is a wise investment and an excellent
reference for veterinarians as well as all horse owners.

A
Modern Horse Herbal by Hilary Page Self |
“Recommended for any horse owner interested
in alternative approaches to horse care”
|
| In
the last few years, herbal remedies have become popular both for
horses and their riders. This book addresses the use of herbs specifically
in equines. Written by the owner of Hilton Herbs, a successful company,
one might assume that this book would promote her business. However,
she manages to keep things neutral, and at the end of the book includes
an extensive list of resources in addition to her own company. The
book includes descriptions of the herbs themselves, then deals with
specific problems and the herbs indicated for their remedy. The
author describes the methods by which herbal remedies are prepared
and administered, such as poultices, fomentations, tinctures, etc.
All of the preparations are suitable for home; the horse owner need
not be a scientist to follow the instructions. A brief chapter at
the end of the book addresses some alternative therapies such as
chiropractic and acupuncture, which are not necessarily directly
related to herbal remedies, but would likely be of interest to anyone
who wants to find alternatives to traditional medicine. Helpful
warnings, highlighted in green boxes, advise the
reader if |
|
|
there
is any chance of harm to the horse if an herb is used in a particular
situation, such as the risk of one particular poultice blistering
if left on too long. The author does stress that herbal medicine
is not a replacement for traditional medicine, but can be used to
add to the horse owner's battery of protection against equine ailments.
The book is of British origin, and some of the herbs mentioned are
uncommon in the US. In the reference at the end, however, the reader
is supplied with the means for tracking down any of the products
mentioned in the book. Because it is geared to a British readership,
this book may not always be ideal for American horse owners. It
is, however, a thorough guide with a number of useful preparations
and remedies, and could be useful to any horse owner interested
in alternative medicines.
