Select Opti-Coat
is a nutritional equine supplement that includes high concentrations
of fatty acids, biotin, selenium, and Vitamin E in a highly palatable
liquid form. It provides key nutrients for the growth of healthy,
lustrous hair, mane and tail. The sebum stimulates the skin oils,
where each hair is coated and causing them to lie flat and giving
them shine and luster. Sufficient sebum is necessary to help and to
lubricate the skin, forming an oily protective barrier, which also
inhibits the growth of harmful microorganisms. The stimulation of
sebum can be done by brushing, but most importantly by the addition
of the key nutrients in the horses diet. |
| What
are fatty acids and how do they help my horse? |
| |
Feeding
high levels of fat; particularly those high in unsaturated fatty
acids such as linoleic, linolenic acid, and oleic acid are widely
held to increase the amount of skin oil or sebum and thus give
the hair coat a glossier, shinier appearance. Frequent shampooing,
accumulation of dirt and other debris, and illness can rob the
skin sebum. Opti-Coat contains optimum levels of concentrated
fatty acids. |
| Biotin
can help coats too! |
| |
Biotin
deficiencies can cause scruffy skin and scaly non-itching skin
inflammation. A scaly greasy skin inflammation, which in advanced
cases, may affect the lips, neck, thorax, abdomen, and extremities,
may occur. Hair loss, beginning on the face, may also occur.
The dietary requirements for biotin is believed to be a minimum
of .05 mg per day. |
| |
Selenium
and Vitamin E function jointly in protecting body tissue and
hair quality. Deficiencies may show a rough or shaggy hair coat
and in later stages “White Muscle Disease.” Minimum
daily requirements for selenium are 1 mg and 400 lU of Vitamin
E for most horses. |
